Should You Get a Double Eyelid Surgery?
Published April 3, 2023
As the influence of Korean pop culture continues to increase around the world, so do their beauty standards. Because of this, many people born with monolids are now getting double eyelid surgeries.
In fact, double eyelid surgery, or Asian blepharoplasty, is one of the most popular types of surgery in certain parts of Asia. While there’s nothing wrong with having monolid eyes, having double eyelids tends to make the eyes look larger – something that is especially coveted in this part of the world.
But should you get double eyelid surgery? To help you figure out whether or not this procedure is for you, we answered some of the most common questions about it.
What is a Double Eyelid Surgery?
As the name suggests, double eyelid surgery is a cosmetic procedure that creates an eyelid crease to form a “double eyelid.” It’s usually performed on people with monolids or those with hooded eyes.
Individuals with natural monolids don’t have eye creases. This makes the eyes look smaller and, to a certain extent, expressionless.
By creating a crease in the eyelids, a double eyelid surgery can dramatically change their shape. It increases the opening between the upper eyelids and the lower eyelids. This opens up your eyes, making them bigger and more youthful-looking.
Types of Double Eyelid Surgery
There are two types of double eyelid surgery: incisional and non-incisional (suture).
Incisional Technique
This type of surgery involves making small incisions along the double eyelid line and removing the fat tissue between them. Since this surgery is irreversible, it’s ideal if you’re looking for permanent results. It’s also recommended for people with thick or hooded eyelids.
Non-incisional Technique
Also known as the suture technique, this method involves placing sutures along the crease line and tightening them until the desired crease is formed. As the wound heals, the sutures dissolve into the skin until they become invisible.
Because sutures can only hold so much skin, this technique is ideal if you have thin eyelids. Otherwise, the suture could loosen, leading to a loss of fold and the eyelid returning to its monolid shape.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Like all cosmetic procedures, a double eyelid surgery will start with a consultation. During this, your surgeon will look at your eyelids and ask you about your expectations, medical history, and any known allergies.
The actual procedure, however, will vary depending on the type of surgery you’re getting.
Incisional Procedure
This is how an incisional eyelid surgery usually proceeds:
- The proposed double eyelid line will be marked.
- Your surgeon will inject anesthetics around your eyes.
- Incisions will be made along the marked line.
- Fat tissues and certain muscles in between the incisions will be removed along with the marked skin.
- The incisions will then be closed by stitching or with skin glue.
Suture Procedure
Here’s how a suture eyelid procedure is normally done:
- The proposed double eyelid line will be marked.
- Anesthetics are injected around your eyes.
- Small punctures are made along the marked line.
- Sutures are inserted through the punctures.
- Once all the punctures are sutured, they will be tightened until a crease is formed.
Both of these procedures are typically done in-office. The actual procedure can last from thirty minutes to an hour. But you’ll be required to stay in the clinic for a couple of hours for after-treatment medications.
Recovery and Aftercare
After your surgery, expect bruising and swelling in your eyelids. Some people may also experience tightness and a burning sensation.
In general, it can take around 10 to 14 days before you can get back to work. However, it can take months for the incision or suture wounds to fully heal.
To ensure excellent results, you should follow your doctor’s post-operative instructions and avoid:
- wearing contact lenses for at least 2 weeks
- doing any strenuous physical activities, especially those that can increase your blood pressure
- drinking alcohol for at least 3 weeks as it can cause fluid retention
- exposing your wound or scars to sunlight
How Much Does a Double Eyelid Surgery Cost?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the cost of double eyelid surgery in the country averages $4,120. But the actual cost of your surgery will still depend on your location and surgeon. Cosmetic surgeries in areas like New York or Los Angeles tend to be more expensive, and experienced surgeons tend to charge higher than average.
